Please becareful if you rent rooms above Asian Food Recipe , Sg Long (shoplot- known as 南洋食扳) or any hostels. Make sure that they have black and white with you about deposits.

I rented this hostel for almost 7years from a UTAR student to a working adult. The hostel had changed few owners until last year, the direct owner of the building taken over the business and continue operate the restaurant and the students hostel.

Every owner will have their own requirements for their own hostel where I understand.

But I don’t understand few things.

  1. Increasing the rental by saying the rental should be calculated by term 28days as this is according to oversea rental policy. Please be rational as here is Malaysia not oversea. And we as soon residents will to more every year. I spoken to the owner and I told him that this is not reasonable and not connivence for us to pay the rental every month at different dates. And he made changes to the rental by adding the rental from rm380 to rm410. I tolerate with it as I am not going to stay long and I don’t want to find hostel anymore.
  2. No dustbin in public area and pantry area. I am not sure about the hostel outside but been staying here for 7 years this is the first time without the dustbin in public area and In the pantry Which means that we need to throw rubbish by ourself. Ok I still can accept this condition. I only will throw the rubbish after few days so I will keep the rubbish at the corner of the pantry. And it will not make strong smell so I keep it in the corner. And it is hard to throw rubbish at night or even early in the morning because the rubbish bin is at the back of the lorong where it is dangerous for a girl to go to a lorong by myself. It is fine if you let us to put the rubbish at the corner if we don’t disturb the area. But the owner will always spam message them o us saying that the rubbish needed to be clear.
  3. Deposits after leaving the hostel. The owner charged me the air cond service fee and the cleaning fee when he return me the deposits. This is the first time I hear that we need to pay the air cond service fee and the cleaning fee by ourselves. As mention by the owner, the air cond services fee need to be paid by residents is because the air cond we used for more than one year and they needed to be service. The question is what if you didn’t use the money for service on the air cond I used? I will never know. So why should I pay for the charges?
  4. Late return of deposits. As I already leave the hostel for more than 2 weeks, I will need to keep on ask the owner about the deposits. He will always late reply and keep on telling me that he haven’t check the room. Ok I am fine with it too as everyone has their own things to do. But hello for 2 weeks? And I need to ask him Everytime. He didn’t contact me once about the deposit. He said that he need to manage the hostel stuff and request me to understand him. don’t want to reply my messages and even my calls. As I know, returning deposits by bank transfer will only use few minutes of your time.
  5. Don’t return the deposits due to having outsiders staying. The owner said to my housemate that the deposits will not be return because the he brings his girlfriend to the hostel and staying together even one day also cannot. I am not sure about other people, but we students will sometimes bring friends to hostel and do assignment or a discussion. We will sometimes let friend to stay over as it is already midnight. You can deduct the deposits, but can you please let us know before you deduct? The owner didn’t write any black and white or any message stated that we couldn’t bring friends over for a stay. And he just direct at deduct the deposit after my housemate leave the hostel.

So dear UTAR students, please becareful with the owner of your hostel. Make sure that everything is stated in black and white so that you will not lost your deposit.

Owners will have rights to request anything but please at least give your residents early notice before moving in or written it in the contract.
